CCTV News Channel’s new countdown sequence
A Chinese blogger accused CCTV (China Central Television) News Channel’s recently unveiled countdown sequence plagirised BBC News’s countdown. I think what he’s talking about is the music. He’s obviously an admirer of the BBC sequence, displaying almost second-by-second stills from it. I’m not a music expert. To my untrained ears, they do sound a bit similar.

Not only the music sounded very similar, but the montage also looked like a copy.

CCTV may have paid the BBC or the music production company for the rights to this music sweep. I do not know, but I doubt the BBC approved this because BBC World News uses this sequence. The Chinese government bans BBC World News in all but major international hotels that have a very large proportion of clientel from abroad. It only allowed BBC World into these hotels a few years ago. It would not make sense for the BBC to approve that a competitor uses a promo that appears identical in nature. On balance, I thnk CCTV paid a production company for the use of the music and edited video in the same style of the BBC.
